![]() ![]() Snapchat fell, stood up and conquered, as the chat app currently has a sloppy 178 million users. In December 2011 Snapchat had 2,241 users and in January 2012 this number rose to 20,000. The rebranding caught on, as the app became enormously popular with schoolchildren. However, Spiegel didn't let itself be known and decided to rebrand Picaboo to Snapchat, including the iconic ghost. ![]() Investors didn't have much interest either, because why would someone send a photo that disappears immediately? The app didn't work and a month later Picaboo had only 127 users, a deception. The app appeared on the App Store in July 2011, but Instagram momentum didn't materialize (Instagram already had 10,000 app downloads on the first day). Spiegel got excited and that's how Picaboo was born. The idea for Picaboo, a chat app with temporary content, arose when a discussion partner told about a photo he had sent someone and regretted. Spiegel experienced this during the launch of Picaboo, the predecessor of Snapchat. It is part and parcel of the job as an entrepreneur. How'd he get it done? What can we learn from this young billionaire? Coming up after trial Snapchat went public under the name Snap Inc, which made Evan Spiegel and co-founder Bobby Murphy a billionaire in one fell swoop. ![]() Spiegel turned down this offer and the business world was perplexed: a genius or stupid move? Snapchat continued to grow and Spiegel was paid a salary after work this year. Mark Zuckerberg also noticed that users were being snatched from his platform and decided to make Spiegel a proposal: a takeover bid of 3 billion euros or compete with his Facebook. The app is extremely popular among young people, no less than 3 billion 'snaps' (messages) are sent every day. The big difference between these apps is that Snapchat has no timeline and the sent videos or photos disappear after a few seconds. Just like Facebook and Twitter, Snapchat is a social media app. When it comes to wealth, he's not yet near Elon Musk ($13.4 billion) or Mark Zuckerberg ($56.7 billion), but Snapchat-CEO Evan Spiegel, with a current fortune of $3.3 billion, is well underway. ![]()
